Getting Started Using Veteran & Military Benefits
Follow these steps to start using VA Benefits, Tuition Assistance, or State of Oregon
benefits. For more information about a specific benefit, review our Education Benefits
page.
1. Apply to receive your benefits
If you expect to receive benefits through the VA, apply at the VA website.
If you expect to receive benefits through Tuition Assistance, contact your Education
Services Officer.
2. Apply for admission at LBCC as a degree-seeking student
Be aware, if you are using Tuition Assistance you should only enroll in courses after your TA is approved but you can apply to admission prior to TA approval.
3. Collect your documentation

Please note: Documentation can be submitted when completing the LBCC Veterans Office Entrance Form, in-person at the Veterans Office (Takena-117), or via email to vetsoffice@linnbenton.edu.

- Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill®
- Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill®
- Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve
- Chapter 35: Survivors & Dependents (DEA)
- Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill® Transfer of Benefits (TOE)
- Department of Defense Form 214. “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.”
- Only applies to students using these benefits:
- Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill®
- Chapter 31: VR&E
- Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill®
- Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve
- Joint Services Transcript (JST)
- This is an academically accepted document approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) to validate a service members military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations.
- JST covers: Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy: Active Duty, Reserve, and Veterans
- Community College of the Air Force (CCAF)
- Official transcript for Air Force only
- Only applies to students using these benefits:
- Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill®
- Chapter 31: VR&E Benefits
- Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill®
- Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve
- Only applies to In-Service Military Students
- You will need an updated TAR for each term. Can be submitted with your EV Form.
- Only applies to State of Oregon Tuition Waiver benefits
- Documentation options:
- VA Certified death certificate of service member or
- VA letter stating Veteran’s disability rating or
- Veteran’s DD-214 that states receipt of Purple Heart in 2001 or thereafter
4. Complete LBCC Veterans Office entrance form
This form provides the LBCC Veterans Office with information that allows us to process your Education Benefits and is tailored to address the specific document and information needs of each benefit type.

5. Verify enrollment for certification
Once you are enrolled in courses you must submit an enrollment verification (EV) form in order for your course to be processed. Students must complete this step every term. The EV form authorizes LBCC to certify or process your benefits.
