Chinook Hall grand opening embodies spirit of LBCC stewardship, community

Over a hundred members of the Linn and Benton County communities gathered together for the historic grand opening of Chinook Hall, Linn-Benton Community College’s newest building. Amidst the fanfare and joy was also a feeling of pride and fulfillment as the event marked a new chapter of service to students and the community for LBCC.

"We have so many challenges in higher education. We have too many people who get left behind. And we have unique challenges right here in the valley," said OSU President Becky Johnson at the event. "But this building represents innovative and collaborative solutions."

The new addition will serve LBCC’s degree-seeking students who may be dual-enrolled with Oregon State University, and features updated science labs, meeting spaces and community gathering rooms. Chinook Hall also fulfills LBCC’s final promise to the voters who supported the 2014 bond measure that assisted with several construction projects across Albany, Lebanon and Corvallis.

The grand opening began with a performance by the LBCC choir, followed by a series of speeches emceed by LBCC Board member Tony Lapiz. Guest speakers included LBCC President Lisa Avery, OSU President Becky Johnson, Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws Center Director Luhui Whitebear, Corvallis Chamber of Commerce President Simon Date and Regional Director Jeff Davis. The speeches were capped off with a performance from LBCC’s own Poet Laureate Sophia Griffiths.

Following the speeches, President Avery cut the ribbon on Chinook Hall, symbolizing its official opening. Attendees were free to explore the building while enjoying refreshments and photos with Rocky the Roadrunner.

"This was a major undertaking, requiring the teamwork and dedication of a lot of people," said President Avery. "From the staff members who had a vision, to community members who supported it, to the collaborative work groups who grappled with many challenges but were committed to seeing this project through, I thank you."

Now, the real work can begin as Chinook Hall begins receiving students, and even more Corvallis residents can turn to LBCC and OSU for help starting their real futures.
